Got to see & handle the new Ruger AR yesterday. Sweeeeeet!!! But at 2K, I'll have to pass. I'm also not too impressed with 5.56 cal. They are coming on the market now but I don't think they'll be much competition for the other AR platforms out there. I think you can do better price wise unless you're just a Ruger fan and "gotta have one". This one came with it's own bag, 3 mags, toosl, and manual.
Now, if someone came out with a piston AR in 308 X 1-1/2 or 7.62 X 39 at a more reasonable price, I'd have to give it some really serious thought. I don't want a high-maintenace firearm anymore than a high maintenance woman.
But it's worth a look-see.

POF makes a 7.62x51mm gas piston AR rifle. There is no point in making an AR that fires the AKM round. Everything about that rifle would be to expensive. Colt did make some 7.62x39mm rifles. I rather just have the AKM. As for the piston AR-15s. I took that chance. I will stick with DI gas systems. Fail out of the box is something I do not forget.
I'll pass on AR clone platform. I'm sticking with Mini-14 platform - I'm used to mine and find them to be darn nice ranch rifles. Not very accurate, but inside a 100 yards, irons will do nicely.
And the sights / safeties / charging handles are very close to matching my Garand (Big Dog!), using them is almost training with the others.
Ammo is getting very hard in the centerfires. Went to Wally World last night - $18 a box for FMJ .223, geezy peasy thats nuts! Makes loading up on $13 30-30 Winchester SP loads look downright frugal, lol.
Thanks OL.
My AR experience was with the M16A2 & early AR15s. I've had exposure to AKs and mini-14s, both of which left me desirous of better accuracy at 100 - 200 yards. A good rifle, in my opinion, should be accurate out to at least 200 yards, preferably further. I can hit an 18 inch steel plate at 1,000 yards with a black powder cartridge rifle so a more modern rifle should be even more accurate at longer ranges. Also should be handy enough CQB.

Gas piston ARs aren't all that some claim them to be.
If you like the 7.62x39 or 6.8SPC there are plenty of more affordable DI uppers out there. You can have your 5.56, your 7.62x39, and your .22 all on the same lower.
If you get a 7.62x39 upper be sure to stock up on C-Products mags for it. They are the only hicaps in that caliber that I've heard of with a decent reputation for actually working.
